Trouble mounts for Lakshya Sen after first round loss, says ‘can’t say what happened’

India Open: Lakshya Sen lost to WR-31 Priyanshu Rajawat and looked out of sorts in the match.

The World Championships bronze medalist from 2021, Lakshya Sen is having a tough time at the BWF circuit. His ranking has dropped to WR-17, and his first round losses are hurting him bad in the Olympic qualification year. On Tuesday, at the India Open, he lost to compatriot, lower-ranked Priyanshu Rajawat 21-16, 16-21, 13-21.

Despite starting out well, Lakshya could not control the match in the second and the third game, and committed far too many unforced errors. Now in 2024, he has two first-round losses in many tournaments — he had crashed out of the Malaysia Open in the first round after loss to China’s Weng Hong Yang.

The situation seems to have gotten a little out of hand for the youngster, as he has parted ways with his coach, Anup Sridhar already, and these twin losses. Lakshya, right after the match looked a bit clueless, as to what’s happening with him.

“I think I can’t answer what happened in the match there. I’m still in the game. I don’t know what to say,” he said. “Well. I think I come with a game plan. And to some extent I was able to play to it. But I think to continuously do that in a three-setter or to certain match, I think I still have to work a lot on playing patiently and waiting for the right chances to it and at the same time.”
