India Open 2025: PV Sindhu gets easy draw, Malvika Bansod faces Chinese challenge

PV Sindhu gets an easy opening draw at India Open 2025, while Malvika Bansod faces a tough challenge against China’s in-form Han Yue.

The India Open Super 750 is one of the most anticipated events on the BWF World Tour and is set to begin on January 14 at the KD Jadhav Hall in New Delhi. Now in its third year, the tournament will be a big one for the Indian players. India is sending its largest contingent to fight for the trophy this year. Since its elevation to a Super 750 event in 2023, this flagship tournament has become important in the badminton calendar. The spotlight will be on PV Sindhu, who is currently India’s best player in the women’s singles. Similarly, young player Malvika Bansod showed some promise last year and can surprise this time. Since the draws are out, it will be interesting to see how they will face the challenge.

PV Sindhu to face her country’s Anupama

PV Sindhu got a really easy draw in the beginning; she will be facing her compatriot Anupama Upadhyaya in the first round. Anupama is a really good talent; she was the world number 1 in the BWF junior rankings. Although till now she didn’t have much success. The player has already faced first-round exits in her last four tournaments. Looking at this tough draw for her, it will be really interesting if she is able to pose a challenge for her country’s star PV Sindhu.

Malvika Bansod to face China’s form

Malvika Bansod has a tough challenge against China’s Han Yue. The Chinese player is the third-best in her country currently, with a world ranking of fifth. Meanwhile, Malvika is in 31st position in the ranking. Han Yue was going through some troubles with her form, facing early exits before the World Tour finals, but now in the finals, she has shown really good performance, reaching the finals. She’s currently in form and will definitely be challenging for Malvika to face her.

A tough road for Akarshi Kashyap

India’s other player, Akarshi Kashyap, will have it very hard in the first round itself, as she will be facing a world-ranked 13 Pornpawee Chochuwong. The Thai player’s consistency is not as she has faced some early exits in recent tournaments; this will be something positive for Akarshi to look at as she can capitalise on this with support at her home.
