India men’s team secure bronze at Asian Table Tennis Championships

As the Indian men's team prepares for their semifinal clash, they carry the hopes of further success.

The Indian men’s table tennis team has secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Asian Table Tennis Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. This podium finish marks yet another significant achievement for India in the sport, as the team put forth an impressive display of skill and determination in the tournament.

Strong quarterfinal performance by India

The Indian trio of Manav Thakkar, Harmeet Desai, and Sharath Kamal ensured their place in the semifinals with a 3-1 victory over the home team, Kazakhstan. The quarterfinal match saw Thakkar, Desai, and Kamal outclass their opponents Kirill Gerassimenko, Alan Kurmangaliyev, and Aidos Kenzhigulov.

Manav Thakkar set the tone by defeating Kazakhstan’s star player Gerassimenko 3-0 in straight sets (11-9, 11-7, 11-6), putting India in the lead early on. Sharath Kamal then followed up with a commanding 3-0 win against Kenzhigulov (11-4, 11-7, 12-10), further solidifying India’s position.

The match saw a bit of a setback when Harmeet Desai lost his first game to Kurmangaliyev 0-3, but Desai bounced back in style, winning a crucial deciding match against Gerassimenko. His 3-2 victory (6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8) ensured India’s spot in the semifinals and confirmed at least a bronze medal.

Semifinal Challenge Awaits in Asian Table Tennis Championships

Having secured the bronze, the Indian team will face a tough challenge in the semifinals as they take on the formidable Chinese Taipei side. The match, scheduled for Thursday, promises to be an exciting encounter as the Indian players aim to make their way into the final and improve upon their bronze-medal finish.

Historic Moment for Indian Table Tennis

This achievement adds to the growing success of Indian table tennis on the international stage. Earlier in the tournament, the Indian women’s team created history by winning their first-ever bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships. The women’s team, consisting of stars like Manika Batra and Ayhika Mukherjee, had a memorable run but lost 1-3 to Japan in the semifinals.

With both the men’s and women’s teams earning bronze medals, Indian table tennis continues to make significant strides at the Asian level. The men’s team’s stellar performance, led by the experienced Sharath Kamal and supported by emerging talents like Thakkar and Desai, reflects the growing depth and skill within Indian table tennis.

Looking Ahead

As the Indian men’s team prepares for their semifinal clash, they carry the hopes of further success. Their remarkable journey so far is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and the coaching staff. Regardless of the outcome, India’s table tennis contingent can take immense pride in their achievements at the 2024 Asian Championships, having firmly established themselves among the continent’s top teams.
