India at Tokyo Olympics Day 9 Live Results: PV Sindhu, Pooja Rani ready to confirm medals, Amit Panghal begins medal quest: Follow Live Updates
Archery 7:8 AM- Atanu Das vs Takaharu Furukawa (Men’s archery 1/8 eliminations)
Atanu Das has faced some tough battles in the Olympics so far, and he heads into yet another difficult fixture as he takes on Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa in the round of 16 of the men’s archery event. Das, who is the only remaining Indian athlete competing in archery, scripted a memorable comeback to clinch progression, beating two-time Olympic champion Oh Jin Hyek in an epic shoot-off to storm into the pre-quarterfinals. Das has done well to remain in contention and is just two wins away from securing a place in the medal rounds and a potential medal for India.
Athletics
6:00 AM- Women’s discus throw qualification- Group A- Seema Punia
Seema Punia will be competing in her fourth Olympics but is still chasing an elusive podium finish and 38, it could be her final attempt to claim a medal. The veteran has multiple medals at the Asian and Commonwealth Games, but Olympic glory has eluded, with 13th being her best-placed finish. Punia will hope to better it this time around and make it to the next round.
7:25 AM- Women’s discus throw qualification – Group B- Kamalpreet Kaur
Kamalpreet Kaur meanwhile is the first Indian to breach the 65 m mark, and with qualification marks set at 64 in Tokyo, she will hope to match her personal best on Saturday. While Kaur doesn’t have an illustrious CV as of her compatriot, the 25-year-old has got the better of her in the national championships and will be expected to make it to the next round as a bare minimum.
3:40 PM- Men’s long jump qualification- Group B- Murali Sreeshankar
Sreeshankar Murali clinched his berth at the Tokyo Olympics, with a national record jump at the Federation Cup in Patiala, jumping a distance of 8.26m – 0.06m more than his previous best and national record; 0.04m more than what he had to achieve in order to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. The 22-year-old was however likely to face the axe due to a poor national trial and will be determined to put a strong showing in Tokyo.
Badminton
2:30 PM- PV Sindhu vs Tai Tzu-Ying (Women’s singles semi-finals)
PV Sindhu will be aiming for gold when steps onto the court to take on Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-Ying in the semi-finals. India’s badminton queen stormed into her second successive Olympics semi-final after a thrilling 21-13 22-20 victory over fourth seed Akane Yamaguchi. The 26-year-old had reached the finals in 2016 but had lost to Spain’s Carolina Marin, settling for silver. With the Spaniard having opted out of the Summer Games due to an ACL injury, Sindhu will be eyeing for gold but will face a stern test in Tzu-Ying. The Chinese Taipei is ranked No.1 in the world, and has a competitive advantage over Sindhu, leading their head-to-head count 13-5.
Boxing
7:30 AM- Amit Panghal vs Yuberjen Martinez (Men’s flyweight round of 16)
Amit Panghal, one of India’s medal favourites will begin his Olympics campaign when he faces off against Colombia’s Yurberjen Herney Martínez Rivas. For Panghal, the World No.1 boxer in the flyweight category, a medal is a minimum requirement, and he will look to live up to those expectations when he ventures into the ring on Saturday. However, he starts off with a difficult fixture, with Martinez having won the silver at the Rio Olympics five years ago. Panghal got a bye in the first round, and needs just two wins to confirm a spot at the podium, and will be India’s biggest hope for a medal.
3:36 PM- Pooja Rani vs Li Quan (Women’s middleweight quarter-final)
Pooja Rani will hope to emulate Lovlina Borgohain when she steps into the ring to take on China’s Li Qian in the quarter-final. Rani sealed her place in the last eight with a resounding 5-0 win over Algeria’s Ichrak Chaib. The 30-year-old will now face a difficult bout as she takes on Olympic bronze-medallist, two-time Asian champion, and former world gold-medallist Li Qian of China.
Hockey
8:45 AM- India vs South Africa (Women’s Pool A)
India women’s hockey team kept their hopes of progressing to the knouts alive with a crunch 1-0 win over Ireland on Friday. India entered the clash on the back of three defeats and needed a win to maintain a chance to progress through to the group. India are currently fifth in Pool A, level on points with Ireland, but trailing on goal difference. Ireland will take on Great Britain in their final game, and India will need to better their result in order to clinch qualification.
Sailing
8:35 AM- 49er Opening series- Ganapathy Kelapanda, Varun Thakkar
Ganapathy Kelapanda and Varun Thakkar failed to impress again, as they remain 17th in the standings at the end of race 9. With three races to go, the duo are certainly out of contention but will hope to put in a respectable performance, like their 5th placed finish in race 6.
Shooting
8:30 AM- Women’s 50m rifle three positions qualification- Anjum Moudgill, Tejaswini Sawant
India’s shooting contingent has largely disappointed during the Olympics, but Tejaswini Sawant and Anjum Moudgil have a chance to rewrite that script when they take their spot at the range on Saturday. Sawant is a multiple Commonwealth Games medallist, in both the 10m air pistol and the 50m rifle. Anjum Moudgil won the silver medal at the women’s 50m Rifle 3-positions silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and will be aiming for a similar performance in Tokyo. She also gold medals in the 10m Air Rifle category at the ISSF World Cup events at Munich and Beijing.
