India at Tokyo Olympics Day 7 LIVE – Sindhu & Marykom LIVE: Here are all fixtures, timings of events involving Indian athletes on July 29 so that you can stay up to speed!
July 29
GOLF
4:00 a.m. Men’s Round 1 – Anirban Lahiri, Udayan Mane
Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane will carry the Indian hopes when the Olympic golf competition tees off on Thursday at the Kasumigaseki Country Club. The veteran Lahiri is coming off a top-3 finish on the PGA Tour and could spring a surprise in the 60-player event. Mane meanwhile, qualified as the 60th player last month and will be playing his very first Olympics.
ROWING
5:20 am Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls Final B
While Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh are out of medal contention, the duo will be out there fighting for a top 12 finish, having already put in the best-ever Olympic performance by Indian rowers. The duo clocked 6 minutes 24.41 seconds to be placed sixth in the semifinals 2 of the men’s lightweight double sculls and will battle it out to decide the positions from 7 to 12 on Thursday.
SHOOTING
5:30 am 25m Pistol Women’s Qualification Precision – Manu Bhaker, Rahi Sarnobat
The Indian shooting camp has had some days to forget but Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat have the chance to put the agony behind when they step up in the Women’s 25m pistol precision qualification. Bhaker, appearing in her maiden Olympics, finished a creditable 12th, despite losing nearly 20 minutes during the qualifications after the cocking lever in her pistol broke down, forcing her to go to a designated area for getting it fixed. Thursday could be her shot at redemption and Indian shooting. As for Sarnobat, she comes off fresh from an ISSF World Cup stage gold in Osijek, Croatia and will hope to continue her good form at the games, something the other shooters have failed to do so far.
HOCKEY
6:00 am India vs Argentina Men’s Match
Team India come into the clash on the back of an impressive 3-1 win over Spain, having recovered well from their mauling at the hands of Australia. With two wins in three games, the Men in Blue are currently second in Pool A, three points behind leaders Australia. With the top four teams from each pool qualifying, each game is a must-win clash for India, who have games against Argentina and Japan left.
BADMINTON
6:15 am PV Sindhu vs Mia Blichfeldt R16
PV Sindhu stormed into the knockouts at the Olympics with a comfortable straight-sets win over Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi in the group stage. A silver medallist at the Rio Olympics, Sindhu has so far lived up to expectations, clinching dominant wins in the group stage over Ksenia Polikarpova in her opener, before a 21-9, 21-16 win over Cheung Ngan Yi to seal progress to the knockouts. She will face off against Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt, who defeated Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen 21-7, 21-14 and Linda Zetchiri 21-10, 21-3. They have met twice already this year, with the Dane clinching a memorable win at the Yonex Thailand Open. Sindhu won at the Swiss Open and has the overall advantage, leading 4-1 in their head to head battle.
ARCHERY
7:31 am Atanu Das Men’s Individual 1/32 Eliminations
Atanu Das will step into the field on Thursday eyeing redemption when he faces off against Deng Yu-Cheng in the Men’s Individual Archery 1/32 eliminations. Das, India’s highest-ranked male archer, will look to live up to the billing and make his mark, after missing out in the team’s event. With Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav knocked out on Wednesday, Das remains the only Indian male archer still in the competition and will be willing to fire himself through to the quarter-finals.
SAILING
8:35 am onwards Laser Men Race 7 & 8
It has not been a pleasant outing for the Indian sailors so far, and the likes of Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan will hope to bounce back and put in a better performance when they step into the event. Saravanan finished 23rd and 22nd in the fifth and sixth races in the men’s laser event and will be hoping for a better outing on Thursday.
8:35 am onwards 49er Men Race 5 & 6
Indian pair of K Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar are at 18th after four races in the men’s skiff 49er sailing event and will be hoping for a better showing in race 5&6 on Thursday. The duo finished 18th, 17th and 19th in the three races on Wednesday. They finished 18th in the first race on Tuesday in a 19-team race.
8:45 am onwards Laser Radial Women Race 7 & 8
Nethra Kumanan was 32nd and 38th in the two races of the women’s laser radial event. Nethra, who had an overall 27th place finish the other day, did exceptionally well in the third race finishing 15th but fared poorly in the fourth race to finish 40th. She ended the day placed 28th overall. Kumanan will hope to replicate her heroics of the third race and put in a better performance on Thursday.
BOXING
8:48 am Satish Kumar vs Ricardo Brown Men’s Super Heavy (+91 kg) – R16
Satish Kumar is the first Indian to secure a berth in the super heavyweight category (91 kg and above). The pugilist from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh has previously tasted success with a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games and the Silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games but will be aiming to add another to his tally in his maiden Olympics appearance. While a podium finish might be too much to expect from the 32-year-old in his maiden Olympics, Kumar could well pull off a surprise or two, starting on Thursday. His opponent Ricardo Brown himself is a history maker, having become the first Jamaican to don the gloves since the 1996 Olympics
3:36 pm – Mary Kom vs Ingrit Valencia
Mary Kom continues to remain one of India’s main draws at the biggest stage as she marched on to the round of 16 in the Tokyo Olympics. The veteran clinched a 4-1 win over Dominican Republic’s Miguelina Hernandez Garcia in Round 32. The 38-year-old matched her 23-year-old opponent blow for blow, to clinch a famous win, setting up a clash with Ingrit Valencia of Colombia. Kom will hope to continue defying logic and make a solid claim for a podium finish in what could be her final Olympics appearance.
SWIMMING
16:16 pm – Men’s 100m butterfly Heat 2: Sajan Prakash
Sajan Prakash will be hoping to bounce back from his 200m butterfly disappointment when he readies himself for yet another shot at glory on Thursday. Sajan competed in the men’s 200m butterfly event but failed to qualify for the final after finishing fourth in his heat with a timing of 1:57.22. The 27-year-old will hope for a better showing in the 100m butterfly heat on Thursday and aim to qualify for the semis.
