Ah! Another mixed day for the Indian team. Although the country won no medals on day 5 of the Paris Olympics, there was certainly action, drama, sadness, and some upsets within the Indian contingent.
India saw positive results from badminton and boxing, but the shooters disappointed on the fourth day.
Shooting: surprises and setbacks
It was a surprising day for India in shooting at the Paris Olympics. India’s 63rd-ranked Swapnil Kushale reached the final of the 50m Rifle 3 Position Men. He scored 590 in the qualification round and finished seventh. In the same event, medal hopeful and 23rd-ranked Indian shooter Aishwarya Pratap Singh finished 11th with a score of 589 and did not make it to the final.
Rajeshwari Kumari and Shreyasi Singh failed to make the cut for the final of the women’s trap shotgun event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. They finished 22nd and 23rd respectively, with scores of 113 and 125 after five rounds. The top six shooters advanced to the final.
Badminton: A win-win deal
In Women’s Singles, PV Sindhu reached the Round of 16 by winning her second consecutive group stage match. She advanced to the knockout stage by defeating Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba 21-5, 21-10 in a match that lasted 34 minutes.
India’s young shuttler Lakshya Sen caused an upset by defeating world number-3 Indonesia’s Jonathan Christie in his third group stage match. Lakshya Sen advanced to the pre-quarterfinals with a win over Christie 21-18, 21-12.
Table Tennis: youngster impresses, veteran Manika fails
India’s ace paddler Manika Batra failed to impress, losing her Round of 16 match in the women’s category to 8th seed Miu Hirano of Japan 4-1. Manika had a rough start, losing the first game 11-6. Despite a strong fight in the second game, which she lost 11-9, she showed signs of a comeback by winning the third game 14-12. However, Miu Hirano won the next two games 11-8, 11-6, advancing to the next round.
India’s bad day at TT conties after Sreeja Akula faced a disappointing exit from the women’s singles at the Paris Olympics. She was defeated by world number one Sun Yingsha in four straight games during the Round of 16. Earlier, she won her Round of 32 match in women’s singles table tennis, defeating Singapore’s Jing Yang 4-2.
Archery: Deepika Kumari Shines
It was a mixed day in archery for India. Experienced archer Deepika Kumari reached the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s individual category. She defeated Netherlands’ Quinty Roefen 6-2 in the Round of 32 and will face Germany’s Michelle Kroppen on August 3.
Veteran Indian archer Tarundeep Rai lost his Round of 64 match in the Men’s Individual category. He was defeated by Tom Hall of Great Britain 6-4. The first set was tied 27-27, with Tom Hall taking the lead by winning the second set 28-27. Tarundeep Rai won the third set 28-25, but Tom Hall won the fourth set 29-28, with the 5th set ending in a tie at 29-29.
Boxing: Lovlina near medal
Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain brought some good news by making it to the quarter-finals of the women’s 75 kg weight category. She defeated Norwegian boxer Suniva Hoftad 5-0 in the Round of 16. In the top-8 round, Lovlina will face world number-1 Li Quin of China, who defeated her in the Asian Games finals to win the gold medal.
Late into the night, India’s boxer Nishant Dev secured a victory over Puerto Rico’s José Rodríguez in the Men’s 71kg Round of 16. Nishant won the bout by a split decision of 3-2, advancing to the quarterfinals. He will compete again on August 4th.
