India’s national record holder in women’s javelin throw, Annu Rani finished seventh at the Brussels Diamond League 2023 on Friday, at the King Baudouin Stadium in Belgium. She produced a best throw of 57.74m in her third attempt. Even though her personal best is 63.82m, and season’s best is 59.42m, she fell considerably short.

Meanwhile, the reigning world champion Haruka Kitaguchi of Japan won the competition with a massive throw of 67.38m. This marked the world’s best throw this year, her personal best at the Japanese national record. There were as many as five athletes who went past the 60m mark.
This was Annu Rani’s first Diamond League competition this year. In fact, she had competed once at the Lausanne Diamond League way back in 2019. Four years back as well she had finished in the seventh spot. Her form has been a cause of worry for a long time now.

After winning the CWG bronze medal last year, Annu Rani has failed to cross the 60m barrier in all the events she has participated in. Now the Diamond League Finals will be held in Eugene, Oregon, on September 16 and 17, and Annu Rani won’t be part of it. For India, the current champion Neeraj Chopra will only compete.
The likes of Murali Sreeshankar, Praveen Chitravel, and Avinash Sable have already withdrawn from the finals to focus on the Asian Games.
