‘I want to continue to play’: Archer Deepika Kumari to keep competing after Paris Olympics setback

After making her debut at the London Olympics in 2012, Deepika Kumari has participated in her fourth Olympics at Paris.

Deepika Kumari, the ace Indian archer known for her multiple World Cup wins, is set to compete in the 2028 LA Olympics as well. Despite competing in four consecutive Olympics, Deepika has yet to secure a medal. However, she remains determined to clinch an Olympic medal.

Deepika’s appearance in the Paris Olympics was a mix of highs and lows. Returning from maternity leave, she had a strong start by winning individual gold at the Shanghai World Cup in April. However, at the Paris Olympics, she lost in the quarter-finals to South Korea’s Nam Su-hyeon, with a score of 6-4 in five sets.

Deepika also addressed retirement rumours, stating, “I want to continue to play. I was not nervous, and I was playing confidently. One shot went very badly, and I think that is why I lost the match, but overall it was very good.” She has no plans to retire.

Deepika in the team event

In addition to her individual round performance, Deepika’s team event was disappointing. The Indian team, consisting of Deepika, Ankita Bhakat, and Bhajan Kaur, lost to the Dutch trio by 6-0 in just three sets.

Learning from the Olympics and future goals

Deepika noted that she needs to work on quick shooting, maintaining calm under pressure, and improving her focus and concentration. She admitted that a near-timeout situation may have contributed to her missed shot. Looking ahead, Deepika aims to be mentally stronger and fully enjoy the sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
