After losing the first match against Puneri Paltans by 35-25, Mohammadreza Shadloui’s Haryana Steelers will be playing their second match against two-time PKL champions Jaipur Pink Panthers in Pro Kabaddi League on Thursday (October 24). The eyes will be on Shadloui, as the Haryana Steelers roped in Iranian star defender Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh for a staggering 2.07 crore. This bid not only made him the most expensive overseas player in this season’s auction but also strengthened the Steelers’ defensive lineup. In a recent interview with Mohammadreza Shadloio Chiyaneh, she shared his journey, ambitions, and team dynamics at the Haryana Steelers.
Settling into a new team
This is the third team Shadloi has been playing for. He has previously played for Puneri Paltans and Patna Pirates. “I’m fine, everything is okay,” he says when asked about his preparation. With a target of achieving 100 tackle points this season, he expresses optimism about his new team. “I don’t miss Puneri Paltan. Right now, I am focused on Haryana,” he said.
The Iranian defender appreciates the company with his new teammates, mentioning that he has found “some new young friends” in the team. “I have found some new young friends, and I’m happy about this. Every season, I come to another team and make new friends.” he added.
Tackling challenges head-on
Chiyaneh’s previous experience has made him aware of the strategies other teams may adopt against him. In a recent match against Puneri Paltan, he noticed that the opposition avoided tackling him, possibly out of respect for his skills. “They know if they go inside, I can catch them,” he explains. “They know my capabilities from playing against me for a year, so they don’t come to my side. This happens in every match; raiders often choose to play on the other side.” he added.
He recalls moments from the match where he had to move across the court to engage raiders, showing his versatility and readiness to seize every chance. “Sometimes I can’t take all over side and do advanced tackle, and I’m watching to score,” he concluded.
Expectations for the Season
With an impressive track record, when asked if he can replicate such performances in the PKL, he confidently replies, “Maybe, why not? I am a good raider. During the Asian Games final, I had a Super 10 against India. If I am in form, I can help my team.” he added.
Chiyaneh shared insights into the team environment, stating that both Haryana and Pune have young, excited players eager to win. However, he also noted differences in the team’s structure, particularly in raiding capabilities. “We are also good raiders; we have young players who can show their potential in upcoming matches,” he assures fans.
Team and bonding with Haryana Steelers
When discussing his coach, he highlights the importance of learning and adapting. “The coach is a good person; I like him and his coaching. I have learned some tactics that help me improve,” he said. With key players absent, including Jaydeep and Mohit, Chiyaneh knows the responsibility lies heavily on him and his teammate Rahul Sethpal. “We don’t have another choice. We can do it,” he said. “I have gained experience by playing with different Indian raiders and defenders. It helps me become a better defender.” he added.
As the season progresses, Chiyaneh remains focused on qualifying for the finals. “We can win more matches and qualify. We are ready for any situation, we are playing the finals” he concludes confidently.
