Hurdler Jyothi Yarraji misses Paris 2024 qualification despite winning gold in the Netherlands

Jyothi Yarraji will most likely make it to the Paris Olympics, on the basis of her rankings, if she fails to clock 12.77s in a race.

Indian hurdler Jyothi Yarraji came up with a stupendous performance at the  Harry Schulting Games 2024 in Vught, Netherlands on Thursday, to land a gold in women’s 100m hurdles event. Competing in her first competition of the year, Jyothi clocked 12.87s to win the top prize, while Mira Groot (13.67s) and Hanna van Baast (13.84s) of the Netherlands won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

But unfortunately, Jyothi could not secure her Paris 2024 berth, as she missed the automatic qualification mark by one-tenth of a second. The Olympic qualification mark is set at 12.77s. This is just .01 seconds better than Jyothi’s national record mark of 12.78s, that she had created at the World University Games in Chengdu, last year.

But all is not over for the Indian as she has five more tournaments left to makes it to Paris 2024. In fact, this year’s Olympics will have 40 competitors, out of which 25 will qualify on time, while the remaining will be selected on the basis of ranking. So most likely, Jyothi will go through.

Prior to the final of the event, she had clocked 13.04s to top the heats. Jyothi, meanwhile also participated in the women’s 100m as well, and finished with a best time of 11.79s. That wasn’t enough on the day to take her to the final of the event.
