How many games are played in Chess World Championship?

The Chess World Championship 2024 is scheduled for November 25. Here is the number of games that will be played in the tournament.

The 2024 World Chess Championship is currently underway in Singapore from November 25 to December 13, 2024.

The reigning world champion, Ding Liren of China, is facing India’s Gukesh Dommaraju, the youngest challenger in history at just 18 years old, in this highly anticipated match.

How many games are played in Chess World Championship?

The World Championship Match is played over 14 games. The first player to reach 7.5 points or more wins the match, and no additional games are played. If the score is tied after 14 games, a tiebreak will determine the winner.

World Chess Championship 2024 Format

The championship follows a best-of-14 games format. To win the title, a player must accumulate 7.5 points.

  • Win: 1 point
  • Draw: 0.5 points each
  • Loss: 0 points

If the match ends in a draw after all games, tiebreak games will be played to decide the winner.

Time Control: Each player is given 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by an additional 30 minutes for the remaining moves, with a 30-second increment starting from move 41.

The 2024 World Chess Championship’s will be streamed live on FIDE’s social media accounts on YouTube and Twitch. Chess.com’s social media accounts (YouTube, Twitch) will also broadcast the encounter. In India, the match will not be televised.
