How D Gukesh can win World Chess Championship Title with just 14th round left vs Ding Liren

Gukesh was 6-5 up after the 11th round but now stands tied with Liren at 6.5 points.

D Gukesh has a chance to be crowned the youngest-ever World Chess Champion tomorrow. The 18-year-old is tied at 6.5 points with China’s Ding Liren and can break the legendary Garry Kasparov’s record by this time on December 12. Gukesh had taken the lead on December 8, but since Liren beat him, now things are levelled. They played their 13th game earlier today, and the winner of the World Chess Championship 2024 might be decided tomorrow.

D Gukesh World Chess Championship Title winning scenarios

The 14th and last match is scheduled on December 12. Currently at 6.5 points, Gukesh needs 7.5 points, i.e., 1 more points to be confirmed as the World Chess Champion. Let’s see how he can do that and in what ways Liren can stop him.

  • Win the last round (7.5 points)
  • Secure a draw (at 7 point each, they’ll will enter tiebreaker)
  • Lose the last round (will lose)

It’s sudden death now. If Gukesh loses, he’ll lose. If he wins, he’ll be the 2024 World Chess Championship winner. However, if, like the last game, it ends in a draw, it’ll go into the tiebreaker, which will be played on December 13.
