India’s shuttler pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, have progressed to the round of 16 in the women’s doubles event at the Hong Kong Open 2024 held in Kowloon, Hong Kong, China. In their opening match, Jolly and Gopichand defeated Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr with scores of 21-14, 21-13, securing their place in the pre-quarterfinals. In the round of 16, the Indian duo will face the Paris 2024 Olympics silver medallists, Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning from China.
The pair are competing in a tournament after a two-month break. They last played at the Canada Open in July, where they were defeated in the round of 16 by a Thai-Norwegian player.
Lakshya Sen makes an early exit
In men’s singles, Chirag Sen and Manav Choudhary were eliminated in the qualification round. Sen won his first match but was defeated by Xiaodong Sheng. Choudhary also won his opener but lost to Chan Yin Chak.
Other Indian Women’s doubles pair exits
The other Indian pair, Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda, were defeated by Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Pei-Shan and Hung En-Tzu in straight games, 21-11, 21-8, resulting in their exit from the tournament.
Doubles Pair fails to go beyond qualification round
The men’s doubles pair, Vaibhaav and Ashith Surya, were knocked out in the qualification round, losing to Lui Chun Wai and Kuei Chun Hung from Hong Kong, China, with scores of 21-15, 21-9.
Priyanshu and Kiran to kickstart their campaign
Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George, ranked 36th and 41st respectively, will start their men’s singles campaign on Wednesday. In women’s singles, world No. 39 Aakarshi Kashyap and Tanya Hemanth will play their opening round matches.
Mixed Doubles pairs in action
Three Indian pairs will begin their campaigns in mixed doubles: Commonwealth Games medallists B. Sumeeth Reddy and N. Sikki Reddy, Kona Tarun and Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli, and Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh.
