“He is excited to return,” Toni Nadal gives update on Rafael Nadal’s comeback

Toni Nadal gave an update on nephew Rafael Nadal's comeback, stating that he is excited to return and is recovering well from his hip flexor surgery.

Rafael Nadal has been out of action for more than six months now. The 22-time Grand Slam champion underwent a surgery on his injured hip flexor muscle in May. He is currently on the process of recovery. While fans are awaiting for his return to the circuit, Toni Nadal has given a major update on the 37-year old’s recovery and his possible comeback.

Nadal underwent a surgery on his troublesome muscle just before the French Open this year. Following that there has been no big updates from the Spaniard himself. Toni Nadal, who coached the Tennis legend till 2017 much recently spoke about his recovery and the possible comeback.

“Rafa is fine, on vaction, wanting to jump onto the court in 2024. He is excited to return and retire on the court,” said Toni Nadal. “Let’s hope that Carlos Alcaraz will let us win something then,” he added referring to the 20-year old’s red-hot streak. Alcaraz won the Wimbledon this year defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. He is also the World No.1 at the moment.

2024 to be Rafael Nadal’s last year on professional tour

In May this year, Nadal confirmed that 2024 will probably be his last year on the tour. “My goal and my ambition is to try to stop in order to give myself an opportunity to enjoy next year. It is probably going to be my last year in a professional tour,” he said during a press conference in May.

“My idea is to try and enjoy to say goodbye to all the tournaments that have been important to me in my Tennis career,” he had stated. It remains to be seen when exactly he would make a return.

Nadal also would want to sign-off in a big way. It would be interesting to see how many tournaments he would want to play and how competitive he can be on the court after the long break.

He last feature in the Australian Open in 2023. He suffered second round exit in the tournament after sufferring the hip flexor injury while playing against Mackenzie McDonald.

Following his prolonged absence, he has dropped out of the Top 100 in the rankings for the first time since 20 years. He is currently ranked at a lowly 142nd spot.
