India continued their impressive form in the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy with a 3-1 victory over South Korea, driven by captain Harmanpreet Singh’s record-breaking 201st international goal. The win all but confirms India’s place in the semifinals of the tournament. India, who entered the match on the back of three consecutive wins, started strong once again, with Araijeet Singh Hundal opening the scoring just eight minutes into the game.
Harmanpreet Singh’s milestone goals in Asian Champions Trophy
Immediately after Hundal’s opener, Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh doubled the lead in the 9th minute with a trademark drag flick from a penalty corner, marking his 200th goal for India. The team looked dominant early on, with fast-paced ball movement and relentless pressure that tore apart the Korean defence.
However, South Korea, currently second in the standings, managed to slow down India’s momentum in the second quarter. Jihun Yang scored from a penalty corner in the 30th minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1 just before half-time, giving Korea a much-needed lifeline.
India’s response in second half
Despite Korea’s resurgence in the second quarter, India regained control in the third. A penalty corner won by Sukhjeet Singh in the 43rd minute led to another moment of brilliance from Harmanpreet Singh.
His powerful drag flick, perfectly placed in the bottom left corner of the goal, brought up his 201st goal for India, extending the lead to 3-1. This goal not only secured the win but also underlined Harmanpreet’s status as one of India’s most prolific players.
Korea’s fight but India’s resilience
While Korea showed attacking intent throughout, India’s defence held firm in the final quarter, preventing any further damage. Despite a few late pushes from the Koreans, the Indian side expertly managed the game to close out the victory.
With this result, India remains undefeated in the tournament, having conceded just three goals in four matches.
What’s ahead of India Hockey Team?
India, with their fourth consecutive win, remain the favourites in the tournament, having scored 19 goals so far. They have now confirmed their spot in the semifinals and continue to display their dominance on the field. Harmanpreet Singh’s leadership and goal-scoring prowess, along with the team’s strong defence and dynamic attack, make India the team to beat.
South Korea, meanwhile, will need to regroup as they face tough competition ahead, still vying for a spot in the semifinals.
