Imagine being on an all-time high after becoming the first ever Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic Final to lying in a hospital bed moments after learning that you have been disqualified. That’s what happened to Vinesh Phogat in a matter of a few hours. In an attempt to make the weight before her final, the pugilist cut her hair, didn’t sleep all night, didn’t eat or drink since her semifinal bout against Yusneylys Guzmán, and even thought of drawing blood out of her.
PT Usha consoles Vinesh Phogat
But nothing panned out eventually. Now, we are seeing the first visuals of the champion wrestler with her hair cut shabbily and a distraught-looking Vinesh sitting on the bed with Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha beside her. It just shows how cruel life can be sometimes; mere hours ago, she was dreaming of winning the gold, and now she can’t even stand on her legs.
A silver was confirmed, but her disqualification hours before the final took place meant that Vinesh wouldn’t get a medal and would end dead last. As if her being out wasn’t enough, we saw another top wrestler, Antim Panghal, being ousted from the Paris Olympics.
