Government-backed ‘wrestling nationals’ begin on Saturday, Vinesh Phogat in focus

The government has made it clear that the wrestling nationals in Jaipur will be valid, while the one in Pune won't be recognised.

Amidst the tussle between the suspended WFI and the Sports Ministry, several top wrestlers have reached Jaipur to participate in the government-recognized Nationals, which begins on Saturday, as per a report in Sportstar. The competition will serve as a test event for the grapplers, prior to the all-important Paris Olympic qualifiers.

Meanwhile, there will be other Nationals organised by the suspended WFI, that will be held in Pune later. The elite wrestlers in the country, who are in actual contention to make to Paris 2024, and maybe win a medal too, would be present at the Jaipur event, who would need SAI’s funding for preparation this year.

Vinesh Phogat to Make a Comeback

Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who has been out of action, first due to the protest, and then after a knee surgery, will participate at the Nationals in Jaipur. This will be for the first time since 2019, that she will be a part of the tournament, as per the WFI records. Apart from her. Anshu Malik, Sarita Mor, and Nisha Dahiya will also be competing at the Jaipur event.

The entire issue of two Nationals cropped up, in December, when the WFI was suspended, three days after Brij Bhushan Singh backed Sanjay Singh was elected as the president. The move had only come after the WFI decided to hold age-group nationals in Brij Bhushan’s stronghold, Gonda.
