It’s been a dream year for Sumit Nagal. The highest-ranked Indian men’s singles player has soared to new heights. In just three months, his ranking has gone from 138 to 80, and now he has a big chance to represent India at the Paris 2024 Olympics. For him, the prize money he’s pocketed so far in the year is just as important as his ranking surge.
Turnaround of fortunes for Sumit Nagal
At the end of 2023, Nagal had just Rs 80000 left in his bank account. The 26-year-old revealed this news after he upset Alexander Bublik in the opening round of the Australian Open 2024. Now, after he’s exited in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters, he earned himself another Rs 38.16 lakh.
That takes his prize money collected this year to Rs 2.27 crore. A big reason behind this surge is his newfound confidence. After his Australian Open run, the world’s best doubles player, Rohan Bopanna, revealed that Nagal has now started to believe in himself.
That run in Australia had seen him earn a whopping Rs 1.5 crore. From struggling to make ends meet to earning almost 20% of his total career prize money in just a matter of a week. Ranked 80, Nagal now has a chance to further add to his kitty, with two Masters and a French Open coming his way in the next couple of months.
