Both the players started the game positively as they held their first two service games. It was Ramanathan who broke Cuenin for the first-time in the match in the fifth game as he took a 3-2 lead. However, Ramanathan could not hold on to the lead as Cuenin made a good comeback to break the Indian in the very next game of the match to level the scores 3-3. From then on the neck-to-neck battle continued which forced the first set into a tie-breaker.
In the tie-breaker too both the players continued their neck-to-neck battle. However Cuenin managed to win the tie-breaker 8-6 to put him in the front foot in the contest.
In the second set too both the players continued holding on to their serves as they were on 3-3 after six games. Cuenin finally managed to break Ramanathan in the seventh game to take lead. That one break was enough for Cuenin to win the contest as he went on to win the set 6-4.
With the victory, the 18-year old moves into the third round of the qualifiers and is just a step away from entering the main draw of a Grand Slam event in his very first attempt. Meanwhile, Ramathan has to wait much longer to make his maiden appearance in a Grand Slam main draw.
