Daniil Medvedev vs Laslo Djere

Daniil Medvedev still has issues with claycourt tennis, but the world number two cantered into the French Open third round with a 6-3 6-4 6-3 win against Serbian Laslo Djere on Thursday.

The Russian, who reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year after four consecutive first-round exits, struggled at times but his elasticity eventually made up for his lack of natural ability to move around on the slow surface.

Medvedev found himself down a break in the first set but his brilliant defence helped him claw his way back both times on Court Philippe Chatrier.

He will next meet 28th seed Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Zdenek Kolar

Last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas will look to put on a much better show in the second round when he faces Czech’s Zdenek Kolar. The fourth seed lost the first two sets against Lorenzo Musetti in the first round and then came from behind to win the next three sets and book a spot in the second round. Considered to be one of the contenders of the title, he will look to live up to his billing and get back to his best form.

Meanwhile, 25-year old Kolar, who entered the tournament as a qualifier, defeated Lucas Pouille in the first round in four sets to enter his maiden second round of any Grand Slam event. He will face a tough challenge against a player who is ranked fourth in the world.

Iga Swiatek vs Alison Riske

Iga Swiatek demolished American Alison Riske 6-0, 6-2 as she raced into the third round of the French Open on Thursday with her 30th consecutive victory. The world number one wasted no time on court Suzanne Lenglen, showing no mercy as she went close to dishing out the first ‘double bagel’ of this year’s tournament.

The Polish player, the hot favourite to claim a second title in three years, was virtually unchallenged by the world number 43 who could only manage seven points in the opening set. Riske put up something of a fight in the second, letting out a big scream and raising her hand in celebration when she won her first game to reduce the arrears to 3-1.

Swiatek did not ease the pressure and wrapped it up in just over an hour when Riske’s backhand sailed long. She is on the longest winning run since Serena Williams bagged 34 consecutive victories in 2013 – still a far cry, however, from Martina Navratilova’s all-time record of 74 from 1984.
