Novak Djokovic vs Yoshihito Nishioka

Defending champion Novak Djojkovic will began his French Open campaign in style as he defeated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 6-1. 6-0 to storm into the second round. Djokovic hit 9 aces and 35 winners overall in the game. It was the fewest games Djokovic has lost in a completed first round match since his 1st ever match in 2005 against Ginepri which he won 6-0 6-0 6-3.

Stan Wawrinka vs Corentin Moutet

Three-times major champion Stan Wawrinka crashed out of the French Open in the first round to Frenchman Corentin Moutet on Monday in his first Grand Slam appearance in 18 months.

The 37-year-old Swiss, who did not play for a year after suffering a foot injury early in 2021 and having surgery twice, paid the price for a lack of match practice with a 2-6 6-3 7-6(2) 6-3 loss in just under three hours.

“I started well and it was a good first set but unfortunately it was disappointing to lose,” Wawrinka told a news conference.

“Unfortunately this is the reality of how I play at the moment. I need training, a lot of work. I am playing well but not at the level for matches like that. This is the reality unfortunately of where I am.”

Rafael Nadal vs Jordan Thompson

The 13-time champion Rafael Nadal powered to a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win over Australian Jordan Thompson in the first round at the clay-court major, marking his 299th Grand Slam win. The Spaniard will now seek to join Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the 300-plus club in a second-round meeting with French wild card Corentin Moutet.

For only the second time in his career, Nadal is seeded outside the top four at Roland Garros, but the 35-year-old’s display against Thompson is a reminder that he remains one of the men to beat in Paris.

Nadal broke the Thompson serve seven times in the match as he found good rhythm on his familiar rasping forehand throughout. It was not a flawless performance from the Spaniard, whose level lapsed in the second set as Thompson battled to his only break of the match for 2-4. However, it was only a minor blip for the 21-time Grand Slam winner, who will be pleased with his first-round outing as he seeks a second major title of the year.
