In a match that stretched for more than three hours, Alexander Zverev put on a terrific fight against the 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal. The German was looking to enter his maiden final at Roland Garros.
The incident happened towards the end of the second set, when Nadal was trailing the set 6-5. He was battling to hold his serve in the 11th game of the set as he led 40-30. Zverev, in a bid to level the score, rushed to return a forehand and twisted his ankle in the process. He immediately slipped and fell down wincing in pain.
He was seen crying, holding his right ankle, as Nadal soon rushed to check on him. Physios soon rushed to help the 25-year old as he received treatment on the court. However, the injury looked too serious and he was soon taken off the court on a wheelchair.

He walked off the court to a rousing reception from the the French crowd who gave him a standing ovation.
Earlier in the contest, Zverev put on a valiant fight as he consistently challenged Rafael Nadal, breaking him on numerous occasions. He stretched the first set into the tie-breaker and almost came close to winning it by having four match points on hand. However Nadal came back from 2-6 and won the tie-breaker 10-8 to seal the first set.
In the second set too, Zverev was looking to push the contest into the tie-breaker but the untimely injury brought curtains to his campaign at Roland Garros. With his withdrawal, Rafael Nadal made his way into the 14th French Open final.
The extent of Zverev’s injury is not yet known and it remains to be seen whether Zverev will be completely fit before the Wimbledon which will begin later this month.
