Harvinder Singh made history by securing India’s first-ever Paralympic gold medal in para-archery. He became a hero in the nation after winning gold in the Paris Paralympics. The 33-year-old’s remarkable journey to the top of the world showcases his spirit despite facing many obstacles in his life.
A video surfacing online where he’s seen practicing on his farm. The nationwide lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic may have thrown his training schedule in disarray. He converted their family farm into an archery range with his father’s support. This innovative solution allowed him to continue his practice and remain focused on his goals.
Batting from childhood
Singh’s life has been filled with challenges. A childhood medical mishap affected his legs, and a later struggle with dengue further limited his mobility. However, these difficulties did not break his spirit. Inspired by the 2012 London Olympics, Singh discovered archery and started training with passion and dedication.
From Bronze in Tokyo to Gold in Paris
At the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, Singh secured a bronze medal. Determined to improve, he came back stronger for the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The archer from Haryana defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek in the one-sided finals by 6-0 (28-24, 28-27, 29-25) to clinch the gold. Displaying exceptional skill, he dominated the competition, winning five consecutive matches and defeating his Polish opponent in the final.
