Fact check: What are anti-sex beds? Are such beds going to be used at Paris Olympics 2024?

Paris will be hosting the 2024 Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11 this year. The French capital will be home to over 10,000 athletes during those days.

The upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 has sparked rumours about the use of “anti-sex” beds in the Athletes’ Village. These rumors claim the beds, made of cardboard, are designed to discourage intimacy among athletes. According to some reports, they are designed to break with sudden movement.

What are the anti-sex bed rumour?

The rumor emerged in mid-June 2024, with photographs showing the narrow beds with “Paris 2024” blankets. The New York Post reported that the beds were made of cardboard and designed to discourage “lovemaking.”

Anti-sex beds to be used at Paris Olympics?

The Paris Olympics team has clarified that the ultra-light cardboard beds are not intended to deter sexual activities. Instead, they are designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable. The beds were first used in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and were made of recycled cardboard. After the Games, the beds will be recycled into paper products, and the mattress components will be recycled into new plastic products.

Rhys McClenaghan, an Irish gymnast, debunked the rumor on social media, stating, “The beds are meant to be ‘anti-sex’. It’s fake! Fake news.” The Olympic team’s Twitter handle thanked McClenaghan and confirmed that the sustainable cardboard beds are sturdy.

We rate this claim as “False.” The cardboard beds in the Paris Olympic Village are not designed to deter sexual activities but rather to promote sustainability and environmental friendliness. Athletes have nothing to worry about, and the beds are sturdy enough to support their needs.
