Pakistan gold medalist Arshad Nadeem’s prize money will not be taxed, the country’s Federal Bureau of Revenue confirmed. The statement came after reports emerged that income tax would be levied on his prize money. Dismissing such reports, FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Muhammad categorically stated that Nadeem was the nation’s hero and that no tax would be levied on his prize money by any means.
Is Arshad Nadeem’s Paris Olympics prize money being taxed?
The Punjab province government of Pakistan announced a reward of PKR 10 cr for Nadeem. Additionally, the country’s sports minister has promised to name a sports city after Arshad in his hometown of Khanewal.
Punjab governor Sardar Salim Haider has also announced a reward of PKR 2 million. The chief minister of Sindh announced a reward of PKR 50 million while the province’s governor has announced another PKR 1 million reward.
“Rumours of taxing national hero [Arshad] Nadeem’s prize money are baseless. No tax will be charged on the prize money received by him,” said Bakhtiar, as per Geo Super.
“Nadeem is a national hero and all possible cooperation will be extended to him. After this clarification, such baseless rumours [of taxing him] should be put to rest,” the FBR official noted.
Arshad Nadeem’s golden touch at Paris Olympics
The ace javelin thrower shattered the 16-year-old Olympic record with a monstrous throw of 92.97 meters.
Not many would have thought Arshad Nadeem could land a gold medal at the Paris Olympics, let alone create a new Olympic record. He was struggling to meet his ends and had just one javelin to practice with.
However, with support from the Pakistan cricket fraternity, especially PSL franchise Multan Sultans, he fought back. He bagged a silver medal in the World Championships and gold in the Commonwealth Games to warm up for the Olympics.
