Facing flak for Paris Olympics opening ceremony, India’s costume designer wants focus on medals instead

The costume designer for India’s contingent at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony has defended his creations amid backlash on social media. Tarun Tahiliani affirmed that he stood by the design he made, adding that the focus should shift on the medals now. He has been under fire over the fans’ fury over the costume for the Indian athletes in the opening ceremony that saw a boar parade on river Seine.

“I stand by these uniforms,” Tahiliani said, adding, “It was not my decision to put the ladies in sarees at the last minute, but still I wanted a cohesion between the flag and uniforms, and I stand by them.”

“It’s time to focus on the medals I think,” the fashion designer said

Multiple fans, including shuttler Jwala Gutta, had taken to social media to react strongly against India’s costume for the event. The male athletes were dressed in a white kurta pyjama with a jacket featuring the saffron and green of the Indian flag, while the women athletes wore sarees.
