After a gruelling three-setter against Novak Djokovic last night, Djokovic passed a stern semi-final test from Taylor Fritz as he won the contest 7-6(5), 7-6(6) to move within one victory of equalling Roger Federer’s record of six titles at the prestigious season finale.
Taylor Fritz, who was playing his maiden semifinal at the season finale started off well as right from the start he was pushing the Serbian. However an in-form Djokovic managed to get the first break in the fifth game of the first set to lead 3-2. But the lead just stayed for a short while as a spirited Fritz broke nack Djokovic in the next game to level the scores 3-3 From then on both the players managed to hold their remaining service games as the first set moved into the tie-breaker. Djokovic found a way to pull through after 5-5 in the tie-breaker as he won the next two points to grab the first set.
In the second set, Fritz started off by breaking Djokovic’s first service game and the Serbian had to play catch-up for a major part of the set. However Djokovic managed to break back Federer finally to level the scores 5-5. Eventually, the set moved into another tie-breaker and this time too it was the former World No.1, who won the set to book a spot in the summit clash.
“I’m very much motivated and hungry. Just one match left. Hopefully I’ll give my best and win,” said Djokovic after his semifinal victory. Should he lift the trophy, Djokovic will also claim the largest payday in tennis history, with $4,740,300 on offer for claiming the ATP Finals trophy undefeated. The 35-year-old Djokovic is chasing his fifth tour-level title of the season in Turin. The Rome, Wimbledon, Tel Aviv and Astana champion now holds a 45-17 career record at the ATP Finals
