The World No.1 has lifted the trophy in Dubai five times and continued his 2022 title bid with a dominant display against Karen Khachanov, downing the Russian 6-3, 7-6(2) in one hour and 38 minutes at the ATP 500 event.
The 20-times Grand Slam champion dominated the opening set after breaking serve in the fourth game with a winner.
It was much more of a battle in the second set as Khachanov recovered from an early break of serve to level the set at 4-4.
Djokovic was forced to pull out all the stops to fend off a fired-up Khachanov, forging ahead in the tiebreak and claiming victory on his first match point.
The Serbian is competing for the first time this year after his Australian Open hopes were dashed when he was deported following an 11-day saga revolving around his decision not to have a COVID-19 vaccination and a controversial exemption he had been granted to play in the event.

It was an easy game for the World No. 1 Novak Djokovic who played his first game of 2022 after missing out on the Australian Open 2022 last month due to some visa issues. However, the Serbian’s return to the court was sweet as he easily defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3. The Serbian is touted to be the favourite in this fixture.
Karen Khachanov faced Australian ace Alex de Minaur and achieved his victory in the third set after going down in the second set. Khachanov began the game on a good note and quite easily dispatched his opponent 6-3 in the first set. However, the Australian fought well and took the second set 7-6. It was a hard-fought victory for Khachanov who took the last set 7-5 and ensured his meeting with Novak Djokovic for the Round of 32 of the competition.
