Divya Kakran vs Delhi Government: Wrestler Divya Kakran, who won the bronze medal in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Women’s 68kg category has lashed out at the AAP Government in Delhi for failing to provide her any support or recognition. The 23-year old Wrestler, who has now moved to Uttar Pradesh has said that she was forced to make the move as the Delhi government has failed to provide her any support during the initial days of her career.

Divya, grew up in Delhi and represented the state in all the wrestling tournaments right from a young age. Speaking at a press conference, she said, “I came to Delhi in 2001 and in 2006 I started wrestling. I am living here in Gokalpur for the last 22 years. My father somehow managed to get me trained for wrestling, I used to wrestle with boys to earn money.”
“In 2011, I won bronze for Delhi. Till 2017, I got 58 medals all for Delhi. But only Manoj Tiwary (Lok Sabha MP representing BJP) came to us and gave me 3 lakh. They (Delhi Government) did not give any help. We, at our family cried a lot at our condition. Only then I went to UP,” she said.
The issue came to light when after she won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games this year, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal posted a congratulatory tweet for the Boxer’s achievement. In a reply tweet to Kejriwal, she posted, “I thank the Delhi CM from the bottom of my heart for congratulating me on my victory. I have a request, I have been living and practicing in Delhi for the last 20 years, but I neither received any prize money nor did I get any help from the state.”

“I request you that I be felicitated in the same manner you honour other Delhi wrestlers even if they represent other states,” she added. Divya moved to Uttar Pradesh in 2018 and she was awarded the Rani Laxmi Bai award in 2019 and she was also promised a life-long pension. “The UP government helped me a lot.” she said.
However, on August 7, AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj responded to the claims by tweeting that Kakran never represented Delhi. Divya then proved it by showing the certificates that confirmed her representing Delhi in competitions.
The Bronze medal at the CWG 2022 is Divya’s second Commonwealth Games medal, she had earlier won bronze in 2018 Games at Gold Coast. She has also won bronze medal in the same weight category at the 2018 Asian Games. She has won two gold medals at the Asian Championships in 2020 and 2021 and has also won a Commonwealth Championship gold medal in 2017.
