Antim Panghal’s exits Paris Olympics as her repechage hopes crushed after Yetgil loss

Antim Panghal lost her first bout (round of 16) at the Paris Olympics against Turkiye's Zeynap Yetgil.

Indian wrestler Antim Panghal concluded her Paris Olympics campaign after her opponent failed to reach the finals. Panghal, an Asian Games bronze medalist, started her campaign with a loss against Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil in the Round of 16 of the women’s 53kg freestyle wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday. She lost the bout 10-0.

Panghal still had a chance to compete in the repechage round, but for that, the Turkish wrestler had to reach the finals. Unfortunately, luck did not favour Panghal, as Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil lost to Germany’s Wendle Annika by 5-0 (victory by fall) in the quarterfinals.

Earlier today, one medal hope for India was crushed when Vinesh Phogat, the finalist in 50kg women’s wrestling, was disqualified for missing the weight cut by slightly more than 100 grammes. In addition, India’s medal hopes in the category ended.

Road to the Olympics

Antim Panghal’s journey to the Olympics has been impressive. After winning a bronze medal at the Asian Games last year, she secured India’s sole quota in the 53kg category by winning the national trials.
