Mike Tyson gained notoriety in 1986 after defeating Trevor Berbick and becoming, at the age of 20, the sport’s youngest heavyweight champion. Tyson became a professional in 1985, and the following year he won the heavyweight championship. He held that title until 1990 when James “Buster” Douglas defeated him.
Tyson and Desiree Washington first crossed paths at an Indianapolis Miss Black America pageant rehearsal in July 1991. Washington escorted Tyson back to his hotel room, where she claims he sexu*lly assaulted her early on July 19th. Tyson insisted that the act was mutual. A grand jury indicted the well-known fighter in September of that year, and he was found guilty in February of the following year. He started his sentence in March at the Indiana Youth Centre close to Plainfield, Indiana. In March 1995, following a three-year sentence, he was freed.
