The tournament marks the restart of the BWF World Tour following a suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sindhu is seeded fourth for the event, while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty are seeded seventh in their category.

PV Sindhu, who was playing her first match after the Tokyo Olympics win, defeated Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit 21-12, 21-10.

India’s Men’s doubles pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila progressed to the next round as they beat England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy 21-19, 21-15.

The Indian men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy progressed to the next round as they defeated the English duo of Callum Hemming and Steven Stallwood 23-21, 21-15 at Court 3.

PV Sindhu had taken a break following her Tokyo Olympics triumph, missing the Sudirman and the Thomas and Uber Cup finals. Now fresh from a period of rest, the Indian ace will be gunning for glory as she begins her campaign against Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit. Saina Nehwal, who walked out of the Thomas and Uber Cup with injury, faces a stern test in Japan’s Aya Ohori in her opening round. Sindhu is the highest-seeded player in her half after Chen Yufei, reigning Olympic champion and top seed for the event pulled out.

As for men’s singles, India have very little hope with some tough draws coming their way. Sai Praneeth and Kidambi Srikkanth will face off against each other, and both will be looking for a morale-boosting win after disappointment in the preceding tournaments. Young Lakshya Sen faces compatriot Sourabh Verma in his campaign opener and will be eager to prove a point having missed out on the team for Sudirman and the Thomas Cup.

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will carry huge hopes as the seventh seeds begin their campaign English combination of Callum Hemming and Steven Stallwood. the Indian duo won four games at the Thomas and Uber Cup, exceeding expectations when the rest of the Indian team faltered. The women’s doubles pair of N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa and Meghana Jakkampudi and S Ram Poorvisha are also in the fray.
