Delhi crowd leaves disheartened as Germany silences Indian Men’s Hockey Team in 2-0 win

German dominance left Indian fans disappointed in Delhi as the visitors clinched a 2-0 win. Despite India's efforts, they couldn’t score, leaving the crowd disheartened.

International hockey is back in New Delhi after 10 years, as Germany clinched the first match of the two-match bilateral series with a 2-0 victory. The thrilling encounter took place at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in New Delhi, where fans gathered in large numbers, thanks to free entry. The crowd was buzzing with excitement to witness a match between the reigning world champions and the Olympic bronze medallists. Harmanpreet Singh, the star of the Indian hockey team, received the loudest cheer from the fans, but they go disheartened at the end of the day.

Germany’s early strike sets the tone

The first quarter didn’t go well for India, as the German team, with their quick movements, took the lead in the early minutes. In the fourth minute, Mertgens Henrik found the back of the net, capitalising on India’s defensive lapses to give Germany an early advantage. Despite a few penalty corners from both sides, no other goals were scored in the first half.

Missed opportunities in the second quarter

The second quarter saw the Indian crowd chanting “India, India!” in high spirits. Although the game witnessed a series of passes and aerial play, neither team could make a significant impact. India’s best chance came with a penalty corner, but they failed to convert it. In the final moments of the quarter, Jarmanpreet Singh seemingly equalised, sparking cheers across the stadium. However, after Germany’s review, the goal was disallowed, and India was awarded a penalty stroke. Harmanpreet’s attempt was saved by Joshua Onyekwue Ninaji, keeping Germany in the lead. In the dying seconds, Germany’s captain Lukas Windfeder converted a penalty corner, securing their second goal.

Germany dominates the third quarter

The third quarter was all about German dominance. They controlled possession for the majority of the period, with India earning a few penalty corners but failing to capitalise. Germany’s aggressive passing and swift counter-attacks kept India on the back foot, while the young German team showcased brilliance throughout. Harmanpreet Singh came close with a superb effort, but his shot went just wide, hitting the side netting.

India falls short in the final quarter

The energy in the stadium began to fade during the fourth quarter as Germany maintained control with quick passes in the opening minutes. India made several attempts to break through in the middle of the quarter, but the German defence held firm. The “Eagle Bearers” dominated the final quarter, giving India no real chance to mount a comeback. Despite their efforts, the Indian team couldn’t find the back of the net, and the fans left disappointed, having witnessed a goalless outing from their team.
