Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren, the defending World Chess Champion, considers D Gukesh the frontrunner for their upcoming World Chess Championship, scheduled for November. Liren has acknowledged his recent dip in form, which may give Gukesh an edge as they prepare for their high-profile match.
Liren claimed the World Championship title in April 2023 by defeating Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi. Since then, Liren has participated in fewer tournaments, which has affected his performance. He made a return to competitive play earlier this year at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, where he finished in ninth place.
Gukesh and Liren at the Chess Olympiad
Both Gukesh and Liren are currently competing in the 45th Chess Olympiad. The Indian team, featuring Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, and Arjun Erigaisi, has shown impressive form with five consecutive victories, tying for the top position with Liren’s Chinese team and hosts Hungary.
In an interview with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Liren remarked, “I see my opponent Gukesh performing exceptionally well in this tournament. He might be the favourite for the World Championship match and has a higher rating than me. Although I have dropped in ratings since last year, I will strive to close the gap.”
Gukesh’s strong form
18-year-old, Gukesh, earned his place as the World Championship challenger by winning the Candidates Tournament in April. Having celebrated his 18th birthday in May, he is the youngest contender in history. The World Chess Championship match between Gukesh and Liren will take place in Singapore from November 20 to December 15, with a prize fund of USD 2.50 million. Should Gukesh win, he will become the first Indian to hold the title since the legendary Viswanathan Anand, who won it five times.
Liren also mentioned the possibility of a tight contest for the gold medal between India and China in the 11-round Olympiad, where the team with the highest points will be declared the winner. “Both teams are very strong, and we have a chance to compete for the gold medal,” Liren said. Gukesh, however, noted the strength of all participating teams, adding, “Every team is strong. We need to maintain the right spirit every day… Our team’s mood is positive, and it’s enjoyable.”
