Chhattisgarhiya Olympics: Kerketta is the third kabaddi player in around a month to die from injuries suffered in the tournament.
On October 12, 35-year-old Thandaram Malakar was injured after he was grabbed and thrown on the ground during a match in Raigarh. He died on the way to hospital, as bad roads turned the 40km into a four-hour ordeal.
Just three days later, 30-year-old Shanti Mandavi died from injuries suffered in a match.
Kerketta was competing in a tournament in nearby Sundru village on October 17 when he got injured. There was an ambulance on site and he was taken to the local community health centre and then admitted to a private hospital in Raigarh.
Officials said Kerketta’s condition remained critical. He was treated under the Ayushman scheme and the district administration pitched in as well. CM Bhupesh Baghel has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the family, as with the earlier two deaths.
The three-month long rural games, popular as ‘Chhattisgarhiya Olympics’, aims to revive 14 traditional sports and is held for different age groups at the panchayat, block, district and state levels.
This year’s edition was inaugurated on October 6 and will continue till January 6, 2023.
