Davis Cup 2022 LIVE: India lose 1-3 to Norway: Sumit Nagal gave India a consolation victory as he defeated Norway’s Lukas Lilleengen 6-2, 6-1. However even before this contest, Norway defeated India as they won the first three matches. After Norway won the first two singles matches on Friday, the tie resumed on Saturday with India’s doubles pair Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni faced a 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 defeat against Casper Ruud and Viktor Durasovic. The day began with Bhambri and Myneni facing the much less experienced Norway duo in what was a must-win game for India. Despite having won five titles in the Chellenger Tour this year, the Indian duo found it difficult to get going against Ruud and Durasovic. The Norwegian pair first broke the Indians but they made a good comeback breaking the Norwegian pair immediately. However Ruud and Durasovic found a way to get back a break to take 4-2 lead in the set and managed to win the first set 6-3.
In the second set, the Indian duo fought back well and showed their experience as they earned a break against their rivals and went on to clinch a comfitable 6-3 victoty in the second set, taking the game into the decider. When it looked like the Indian pair would go on to win the contest, the Norwegian pair managed to break the Indians to take 4-2 lead. From then on, it was not possible for Bhambri-Myneni pair to ake a comeback as they lost the match as well as the tie to Norway.
With the tie already decied, Sumit Nagal and a much lower ranked Lukas Lilleengen played in the third men’s singles tie which the Indian managed to win comfortably 6-2, 6-1, dropping just three games. India could have fought better against a much lower ranked opponent in Norway, but it was not meant to be and the Rohit Rajpal-led side now needs to play in a qualifier at a much later date.
