India’s D Gukesh made history on Thursday by becoming the youngest chess world champion, defeating defending titleholder Ding Liren of China. The decisive 14th game in Singapore saw Liren make a costly mistake in the endgame, allowing Gukesh to clinch victory. At 18, Gukesh is four years younger than Garry Kasparov, who previously held the record for the youngest world champion since 1985.
Gukesh defeated Ding Liren in Round 14 after both were tied at 6-6 points following 13 games. The Indian prodigy delivered a checkmate on Ding’s 48th move and secured victory on his 50th move.
