Tamil Nadu’s young chess star, Gukesh D has done an amazing job after scripting history at the World Chess Championship finals. The 18-year-old boy from Tamil Nadu beat China’s Ding Liren in Singapore on Friday. The match was tough, going on for 14 rounds. Gukesh made a smart move in the 53rd turn and won. This win makes him one of the best chess players in the world and second Indian player to win it after Vishwanathan Anand.
Many important people are happy about Gukesh’s win. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi both said nice things about him. PM Modi called it a historic moment and praised Gukesh’s hard work. CM Stalin was so proud that he announced a big prize of ₹5 crore for Gukesh from the Tamil Nadu government.
Prize more than the Olympic medalists
The ₹5 crore prize is a lot of money. It’s even more than what many Indian Olympic winners get. Just like Manu Bhaker, who won Olympic bronze, got ₹30 lakh and Sarabjot Singh got 22.5 Crore rupees from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. Talking about the state governments, Swapnil Kusale, another bronze winner, got ₹1 crore from the Maharashtra Government. Neeraj Chopra, who won Olympic silver, got ₹6 crore, which is one of the few prizes bigger than Gukesh’s.

A bright future for Gukesh
Gukesh’s win is inspiring for many young chess players. At one point of his life he was struggling with money. “At some point in 2017 and 2018 we were running low on money. I could play tournaments and train because my parents friends came forward and sponsored me themselves. So these are all things my parents had to endure for me to just get a chance to play in a tournament” he said after the match. Now after all this hard work, he’s enjoying its fruit.
