CWG 2022 Weightlifting LIVE – India at CWG 2022: Weightlifting has always been a sport that has grabbed a lot of medals for India at the Commonwealth Games. This year too, a bagful of medals are expected from the strong Weightlifting contingent led by Tokyo Olympics Silver medallist Mirabai Chanu. India finished as the best-performing nation in the 2018 Commonwealth Gmes in Weightlifting with a total of nine medals that includes five Gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals. From the last year’s medallists, Mirabai Chanu, Punam Yadav, Giriraja Poojary and Vikas Thakur  are part of the quad this year and they all will be looking to get on to the podium in the upcoming edition as well.

All the Weighlifting events are scheduled to be conducted from 30th July to 3rd August 2022.

  • 30th July 2022 – 55 Kg and 61 Kg
  • 31st July 2022 – 67 kg and 73 kg
  • 1st August 2022 – 81 kg
  • 2nd August 2022 –  96 kg
  • 3rd August 2022 – 109 kg and 109+ kg

Jeremy Lalrinnuga

19-year old Jeremy Lalrinnuga is making his debut in the Commonwealth Games. The teenager has already made a mark in the junior circuit as he has won the Youth Olympics Gold medal in 2018 in the 62 kg category. He will now participate in the 67 kg category at the Commonwealth Games and he ha a bright chance of winning the medal. He qualified for the quadrennial event after winning the gold medal in the Commonwealth Championship last year.

Vikas Thakur 

Vikas Thakur is one of the experienced weightlifters in the men’s contingent who won the medal in the last Commonwealth Games. He won the bronze in the 94 kg category at the Gold Coast in 2018. This year he will look to better his performances as he will be participating in the 96 kg event.

Gururaja Poojary

Gururaja won the silver medal in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games by lifting a total of 249 kg in the 56 kg event. This time, he has gone up to 61 kg and is eager to better his performance at the Commonwealth Games and is eyeing a gold medal. He has been in good form in his new weight category as he won the silver medal in the 2021 Commonwealth Championships.

Mirabai Chanu 

Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu is the overwhelming favourite to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games this year. Chanu, who has already won gold in the last edition does not have much competition in her weight category as she is way ahead of her rivals. She has a personal best of 207 kg in the 49 kg category and she will look to fight with her own and better her tally in the upcoming quadrennial event.

Punam Yadav

Punam Yadav has won the Commonwealth Games medal in both the 2014 edition as well as the 2018 editions and she is now aiming for a hat-trick of medals at the quadrennial event. In 2014, she won the bronze medal in the 63 kg category. Four years later at the 69 kg, she won gold medal by lifting 222kg. This year she will be competing in the 76 kg category. She has already won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Championship last year and is now looking confident of adding another CWG medal to her tally.
