In the first tie of the contest, which was the Men’s Doubles, Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran got the team off to a great start. They registered 13-11, 11-7, 11-5 over Singapore pair Yong Quek & Yew Pang to draw first blood in the contest. However in the second tie, which was the singles contest between Sharath Kamal and Chew Zhe Yu Clarence, the Indian faced a great fight.
He lost the first game 11-7. The experienced 40-year old Indian however made a comeback in the second game. He started the game with a 4-1 lead and managed to lead the contest until Clarence gave a late scare to level 10-10. Sharath Kamal managed to keep his cool to win it 14-12 and level the tie 1-1. In the third game, Sharath Kamal was dominated completely as Clarence won it 11-3.
The fourth game of the tie was a closely contested one and Sharath Kamal led it 6-5 in the first half. But he managed to get only three more points as the Singaporean won the tie to level the overall score 1-1. It was India’s first ever loss in a tie in this edition at the Men’s team event. In the next singles tie, Sathiyan too was made to fight hard by En Koen Pang. The Indian managed to win a tight first game 12-10. He then lost the second game 7-11. Sathiyan managed to pull up his socks as he went on to win the next two games to give India 2-1 lead in the contest.
Harmeet Desai then faced Chew Zhe Yu Clarence, who defeated Sharath Kamal earlier in the tie. Desai got off to a flying start by winning the first game 11-8. From then on the Indian found the momentum as he completely dominated Clarence and won the next two games comfortably to seal the match in India;s favour. This is the Indian Men’s team third Gold medal in the history of the Commonwealth Games.
