Sanket Sargar bounced back from his agony at the 2021 World Championships to seal a stunning gold in Birmingham in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. The 21-year-old was easily a touch above the rest, leading others by six kgs at the end of the snatch round before sealing the deal in the clean and jerk round.
Despite holding a national record, Sargar is struggling to find a stable job. The 21-year-old helps out in his father’s paan shop and food stall in Sangli, Maharashtra.
Speaking to Economic Times before his medal heroics, Sargar said, “If I can win gold, I am sure recognition will come my way. It is my dream to be able to support my father and show him my gratitude for all that he has done for me.”

Sanket has already set his eyes on the Paris Olympics in 2024 and is looking to jump up in weight class.
“I want to make it to the 2024 Olympics and will have to move to 61kg. It will be a huge jump and it will take me two years to be fully prepared for it, but I’m determined to get there,” Sargar had said earlier this year.
“Yes I am aware of it (the cash award) but one thing I can tell you is that whatever comes my way my ambition won’t change. I want to get better and win an Olympic medal for my country,” He added.
