Even before the Mirabai Chanu’s event began, she had the weight of expectations on her shoulders. Chanu, who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year was the clear favourite to defend her 2018 Commonwealth Games gold at Birmingham because of the absence of weighlifting powerhouses like China and Korea. The Manipur lass who holds the World record (119 kg) in the 49 kg clean and jerk category had only her to compete with and she was looking to better her personal best. Despite not being able to achieve it, she lifted 88 kgs in snatch and 113 kgs in Clean and Jerk. Her 201 kg lift is 29kgs higher than Roilya Ranaivosoa, who won the silver medal by lifting a total of 172 kgs.
This is another feather in the cap of the weightlifter, who six years ago made a tearful exit from the Rio 2016 Olympics after failing to lift all the three attempts in the clean and jerk category.
