“For me, my next competition is the World Championships. It also acts as one of the qualifiers for the Olympics in Paris. The competition in the Worlds is going to be massive as all the top weightlifters will be coming there. It is going to a tough competition, especially from some of the top Chinese weightlifters. They are my major competitors,” Mirabai told InsideSport from Manipur.

In fact, the World Championship was supposed to be held in March in China, but the Covid situation forced the postponement as well.  It means that the athlete has good time to prepare for the Worlds, scheduled later in the year in Colombia.

In the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, Mirabai dominated the field like no other to win the elusive medal with ridiculous ease. Her dominance can be understood when the silver medallist Marie Hanitra lifted 29 kgs less than the Indian in the overall weights. She lifted 201 kg overall, 88 in snatch and 113 in Clean and Jerk.

But the scene is going to be the opposite when it comes to the World Weightlifting Championships later in the year. The field is going to be extremely tough with the big names from the world of weightlifting set to compete. The presence of Chinese lifters and others strong nations will make the contest very interesting. The Chinese women are strong contenders in the competition.

It is not just a medal, which is in stake for the lifters in Colombia. The World Championships also acts as one of the qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and all the lifters will hope to deliver their best.

Mirabai enjoying family time now: Mirabai Chanu holds a celebrity status in her Nongpok Kakching Village in Manipur. But she never acts like one. There were joyous scenes when she won a gold medal in Birmingham. Alongside Mirabai’s mother, several other members of the village danced to rejoice Mirabai’s gold.

She was so thrilled and excited that she herself posted celebrations on Twitter. Mirabai after reaching Manipur has been busy meeting family members and loved ones. “It always feels good to be back home. Many people come and meet me here and I feel so happy when they do so.”

Looking ahead, training: However, the Indian weightlifter does not have much more time to spend with her family. She is expected to resume her training from next week at NIS Patiala. In fact, she spends most of her time training, be it in India or abroad. As of now, she will resume training in Patiala and prepare for future meets, including the World Weightlifting Championships.

“I am training here also. But yes, I will be heading over to the NIS Patiala under our coaches coming week (Monday or so) to once again resume training,” she said.
