It is without a shred of doubt that Cricket is the most popular sport in the country. And there is a stark difference when cricket is compared to other sports. Take for example, the Indian Hockey Team returned from Paris after winning the Bronze medal. There was hardly any fans to greet them. And lastly, the team bus that was there to take the team reeks differential treatment that is meted out when compared to other sports.
If parallels are to be drawn, then just a month back, the India Cricket Team won the ICC T20 World Cup Trophy at Barbados. Upon their return to the country, they were met with a rousing reception. And the specialized team bus used to transport the cricketers oozes out class from it’s very core.
Shabby state of affairs?
The India Hockey Men’s Team won the bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1 in the bronze match. Despite starting the tournament well, India were in a good form to fight for the gold. Eventually, they had to bow out to Germany in the semis and ultimately fight hard against Spain to win the bronze medal.
The team returned to the country today, but wasn’t met with a rousing reception. In fact, a small crowd and the media welcomed the heroes back to the country. After being felicitated, the team travelled back with a volvo bus.
When compared to India Cricket Team or even the India Football Team per se, the treatment offered to the Hockey team reeks the class difference that various sports in the country suffer when compared to the likes of cricket.
