Presently, Colby Covington and Leon Edwards are slated to square off for the welterweight title at UFC 296 on December 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Even though Covington hasn’t competed since defeating Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 in March 2022, he will still have that chance. In his previous four Octagon outings, “Chaos” is 2-2, with Usman defeating him in both of his welterweight title fights.

Colby Covington contends that Edwards’ dethronement of him at UFC 278 resulted from his defeats against Usman at UFC 245 and UFC 268, which removed the bout from “The Nigerian Nightmare.”

Colby Covington Believes ‘Leon Edwards Does  Not Deserve His Shot At UFC’

Leon Edwards did not merit or deserve a chance to compete for the UFC welterweight belt, according to Colby Covington. In the main event of UFC 296 on December 16, “Chaos” and “Rocky” are scheduled to square off.

Covington feels he’s followed the high road, even if Edwards and he have both taken unusual paths to the championship fight:

“He just cried, ‘I deserve this, I deserve that’, instead of just going out there and working for it or earning it as I did,” Covington told UFC.com. “I had to earn it the hard way.

“No one gave me this spot to fight for the undisputed title. I had to earn it. I had to go the unconventional way because the straight-ahead way wasn’t available. He didn’t earn it the hard way like I did, and on December 16th he’s going to find out that he’s going to get broken by the American dream.”

It appears that Edwards and Colby Covington have grown independently of one another. Both boxers have faced two rated welterweight opponents and have eight bouts in the top 15 at welterweight. Notably, Edwards lost to Kamaru Usman twice, but he eventually exacted revenge on the opponent.

Not to mention, Colby Covington has two losses and zero victories in his career against welterweight opponents who are presently rated. However, Edwards has three victories, two of which came against Vicente Luque and one of which was against Usman.
