Men’s Singles
Daniil Medvedev vs Lorenzo Musetti
Former champion Daniil Medvedev beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Cincinnati Masters 2023 where Novak Djokovic was preparing to begin his U.S. Open preparations.
Daniil Medvedev, who also beat Lorenzo Musetti at last week’s Canadian Open before losing in the quarter-finals, broke the Italian twice in each set and won 82% of his first-serve points en route to sealing victory in 77 minutes. “We both made some mistakes, we both made some double faults and stuff like this,” third seed Daniil Medvedev, who served five double faults, said during his on-court interview.
Casper Ruud vs Max Purcell
Max Purcell has recorded the biggest win of his career to move into the third round of the men’s singles draw at Cincinnati.
The 25-year-old Australian qualifier scored a 6-4 3-6 6-4 victory against fifth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud in second-round action at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. This is the first top-10 singles victory of Purcell’s career.
It continues an impressive run for world No.70 Purcell, who has won seven of his eight matches in the past fortnight.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Ben Shelton
here was little to separate Stefanos Tsitsipas and Ben Shelton on Wednesday in a sharp-serving shootout on the lightning-fast courts of Cincinnati.
It was the fourth-seeded Tsitsipas who ultimately raised his game in a pair of tie-breaks for a hard-earned 7-6 (3), 7-6(2) victory at the Cincinnati Masters.
Novak Djokovic vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round at the Cincinnati Masters 2023. The World No.2 won the first set 6-4 against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before the Spaniard pulled out of the contest due to a lower back injury.
In his first match in Cincinnati since 2019, and his first tour-level appearance since the Wimbledon final, Novak Djokovic won a 6-4 opening set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before the Spaniard retired in the first game of the second set.
Women’s Singles
Iga Swiatek vs Danielle Collins
World No.1 Iga Swiatek defeated 34th-ranked Danielle Collins for the second time in less than a week with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday.
Swiatek needed just 59 minutes to beat former World No.7 Collins for the fourth time in their five meetings. Swiatek books her spot in the Cincinnati Round of 16 for the second straight year.
“It was a really solid match and I felt I’m not doing a lot of mistakes,” Swiatek said after her win. “I’m happy I didn’t give anything for free. … I could be proactive and not really overanalyze everything, just go for it. I’m happy that I did that.”
Elena Rybakina vs Jelena Ostapenko
No.4 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan held off Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday to make the Round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open.
Last year’s Wimbledon champion Rybakina took 2 hours and 17 minutes to pull off the come-from-behind victory and edge ahead 3-2 in her head-to-head with 2017 Roland Garros titlist Ostapenko.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Ann Li
World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka was also pushed to three sets in her opener, holding off No.192 Ann Li 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to advance in 2 hours and 3 minutes. A semifinalist last year, Sabalenka struggled against Li’s all-court game before steeling herself in the third set to wrench back control of the match and get the win.
“It was definitely a little bit of an advantage on her side because she played a lot of matches here,” Sabalenka said. “For me, it takes some time to adjust to the surface. I was really happy to win this match. She played unbelievable tennis. It was really tough today.”
