While Huang was quite emotional after winning the gold, her evening turned even better when Liu proposed to her in front of the entire crowd. Amidst the cheering of the crowd, Huang said yes to the marriage proposal making it an extraordinary affair at the Paris Olympics.

“I cannot describe the feeling I have because I am happy, happy, happy. Getting the gold medal is recognition of our journey. I was surprised by the engagement ring. I’ve been focusing on training to become an Olympic champion. I never expected it,” Huang said after the event.

While his partner won the gold, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for Liu. He and his men’s doubles partner Ou Xuan Yi failed to make it to the knockouts after being slotted in a tough group. Liu who claimed that this could be his last Olympics, previously won the silver medal in Tokyo.

“I think this might be my last Olympics, and I wanted to make the most of it because their presence really gives me a lot of strength. Besides our families, there were so many fans and friends at the venue,” Liu said.
