China is called one of the best nations to take part in the Olympics for a reason. Recently, India’s challenge for a medal in boxing at the mega event ended with Lovlina Borgohain’s defeat against China’s Li Qian. With this, China also confirmed one more medal at the Paris Olympics.
In boxing, both losing semi-finalists receive a bronze medal. The winners from each semi-final face off in the gold medal match, while the loser of the final receives a silver medal.
This is a historic feat for China because, in all six categories, Chinese players have secured at least one medal in five, whereas Indian boxers have not achieved even one.
China’s performance in women’s boxing
China has demonstrated a strong presence in women’s boxing at the Paris Olympics. Wu Yu has advanced to the semi-finals in the 50kg category, while Chang Yuan has secured a spot in the semi-finals for the 54kg division.
Xu Zichun, competing in the 57kg category, has reached the quarter-finals. Making a significant impact, Yang Wenlu has clinched a spot in the finals for the 60kg weight class. Furthermore, Yang Liu and Li Qian have both progressed to the semi-finals in the 66kg and 75kg categories, respectively.
Indian players and their performance
India sent Jasmin Lambotia in the women’s 57kg, Lovlina Borgohain in the women’s 75kg, Preeti Pawar in the women’s 54kg, and Nikhat Zareen in the women’s 50kg.
Jasmin was eliminated in the Round of 32, Nikhat lost to top seed Chinese boxer Y. Wu in the Round of 16, Preeti Pawar was also eliminated in the Round of 16, and Lovlina lost to Li Qian of China 4-1 in the quarter-finals.
