Canelo Alvarez Records that sets him apart from Floyd Mayweather

Canelo Alvarez’s achievements in boxing are truly remarkable, and they have set him apart from the rest of the boxing world. While Floyd Mayweather’s undefeated record is nothing to scoff at, Canelo’s accomplishments show that he is a versatile and skilled fighter who is not afraid to take on tough opponents and move up in weight classes. Here are the 5 major records and achievements of Canelo Alvarez that highlight how his career has outpaced that of Floyd Mayweather:

Undisputed Champion

Canelo Alvarez holds the distinction of becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion, holding all four major belts (WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO) simultaneously. Floyd Mayweather never achieved undisputed champion status in any weight class during his career. Winning all the belts in a division signifies dominance, and is an accomplishment Mayweather falls short of.

Surpassing 50 Professional Fights

With 58 pro bouts under his belt so far, Canelo Alvarez has been far more active and battle tested than Mayweather was during his 50 fight career. Canelo turned pro at just 15 years old, and has averaged nearly 4 fights per year. Mayweather, famous for his inactivity at times, fought at a pace of only 2 fights per year. The higher volume of fights and additional experience gained by Canelo cannot be replicated by Mayweather at this point.

Different Weight Classes

Light Heavyweight Champion. By defeating Sergey Kovalev in 2019, Canelo Alvarez captured the WBO light heavyweight title, becoming a four-division world champion. Mayweather had a Hall of Fame career, but never won a title at light heavyweight or any weight class above 154 lbs. Canelo’s victory over the bigger Kovalev highlights his willingness to take on challenging opponents at higher weight classes.

Trilogy with GGG

Canelo Alvarez engaged in an epic trilogy with rival Gennadiy Golovkin, facing off three times from 2017, 2018 and in 2022. Trilogies are special in boxing, and provide an opportunity for both fighters to make adjustments and determine who is the better boxer overall. Mayweather lacked a true trilogy rivalry during his career that he could look back on, as he rematched few opponents and often preferred to face new challenges. The Canelo-GGG trilogy is a career accomplishment Mayweather cannot replicate.

Facing opponents twice

While Mayweather faced the likes of Marcos Maidana, Jose Luis Castillo, and Jesus Chavez twice each, he failed to complete the trilogy in any of these matchups. Canelo Alvarez, on the other hand, has proven willing to face the same opponent multiple times if needed to settle the score. His trilogies with Liam Smith and Gennadiy Golovkin highlight this, as Canelo did what Mayweather could not in facing the same rival three times to decisively determine the better boxer.

At age 32, Canelo Alvarez seems ahead in terms of records and accomplishments than Floyd Mayweather did over the course of his full career. Canelo’s undisputed champion status, high volume of fights, win at light heavyweight, epic trilogy with Golovkin, and willingness to rematch rivals multiple times create a legacy Mayweather cannot match. While Mayweather’s undefeated record and pioneer status as the highest-paid boxer of his era are unmatched, Canelo Alvarez has proven to be the more accomplished champion. His records are hard to break.
