India’s table tennis players are about to make history. For the first time ever, both the men’s and women’s teams have qualified for the team events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a testament to their climb into the top 16 of the world rankings.
Climbing the Ladder: India Table Tennis Teams
While qualifying is a significant achievement, head coach Massimo Costantini is clear-eyed about the team’s potential. “Being in the top 16 is not easy,” he acknowledges to Reuters, “but it feels a bit too close for comfort.” His ambitions are far loftier.
He envisions a future where India consistently ranks among the top 10, even the top 4, in the world. This would eliminate the last-minute scramble for qualification and establish India as a true force in table tennis.
Star Players and Data-Driven Training
Leading the charge is Manika Batra, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion and a current top-30 ranked player. Batra’s impressive rise, culminating in a career-high ranking of 24 after winning the Saudi Smash, exemplifies the team’s potential. Sreeja Akula, currently ranked 25th, is another key player who has contributed significantly to India’s ascent.
But Coach Costantini emphasizes the need for consistency. “Sporadic results” won’t suffice. To achieve this, he’s embracing cutting-edge technology. Partnering with an Indian sports analytics company, Costantini is using data from artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize training.
“AI helps us understand performance better,” he explains. “Sometimes, a coach’s words aren’t enough. This data gives us objectivity. We can see if a player who thinks they played poorly actually performed well, and vice versa. It’s like motorsports, where tiny adjustments make a big difference. In table tennis, it’s the same.”
Paris Olympics Calling: Time to Make History
With the Olympic table tennis tournament set for July 27th to August 10th at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, India isn’t just content with participation. They’re aiming for a historic medal, a reward for their dedication and a symbol of their arrival on the world table tennis stage.
